Expert Committee on Data Privacy Protection

Detailed Description

The expert committee on data privacy protection devotes its attention to the following issues:

  • National, European and international developments in data privacy protection
  • Selected case law relating to the law on data privacy protection
  • Selected questions concerning cross-border data transmission
  • Data privacy protection in telecommunications
  • Impact of international regulations on the German Federal Data Privacy Act
  • Issues concerning employee data privacy protection
  • Issues concerning data privacy protection and safety relating to the use of cards (e.g. intelligent chip cards)
  • Developments in the right of informational self-determination
  • Data privacy protection legislation and its evaluation under aspects of constitutional law

The expert committee is composed of about 30 members who devote their regular and relatively close attention to the material. Depending on the themes involved, other members with a more general interest in data privacy issues or with a specific interest in certain issues can also become involved.

The committee places considerable emphasis on the involvement of young lawyers. The participation of trainee lawyers at this early stage has proven its worth for all participants. The same applies to young lawyers shortly after their admission to practice. The committee thus avoids the risk of permanent discussions among experts alone, as a result of which significant aspects would be disregarded.

Participation in the working meetings is free of charge. Membership in DGRI is not necessary for participation. The committee hopes that its work will be so convincing that membership in DGRI becomes a logical consequence. Other events are calculated so that costs are covered if at all possible, without placing an excessive burden on the participants.
